A Palestinian leader started a hunger strike in the West Bank jail where he has been held under U.S. and British monitoring since May, an official in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine said Monday.
Ahmed Sa'adat, whose brother was killed by Israeli troops in a raid last week, was protesting at his continued detention despite a Palestinian High Court of Justice ruling saying he should be freed, the PFLP's Jamil Majdalawi told Reuters.
Sa'adat, the PFLP secretary general, had begun refusing food in his Jericho jail Sunday and would decide after 72 hours whether to continue the hunger strike, according to Majdalawi, the senior PFLP official in the Gaza Strip.
Majdalawi said Sa'adat asked to meet a Palestinian Authority official to discuss the issue of his detention and would decide Wednesday whether to pursue his hunger strike. "U.S. and British monitors are acting like the actual jailers of Sa'adat. They confiscated his mobile phone and have been humiliating visitors," Majdalawi said.
He said U.S. and British agents were conducting long inspections of Sa'adat's visitors. (Albawaba.com)
