Israeli troops backed by tanks and helicopters penetrated into Palestinian sectors of the West Bank city of Jericho early Thursday, reports said.
Exchanges of gunfire between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian resistance fighters erupted as the troops moved some 500 meters (yards) into the autonomous zone in the south of the city.
Sources told AFP that some 10 Israeli tanks were involved in the operation.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army was shelling the West Bank city of Beireh, near Ramallah, Dubai TV reported.
