Six people were wounded on Friday in south Lebanon by explosives left behind by Israeli occupation forces, reported the Daily Star newspaper.

A 67-year-old man lost his right hand when a plastic doll he picked up in a field exploded in Al Jazira village between Taibe and Yohmor in Nabatieh.

Ibrahim Hammoud was picking thyme in a field when he found a doll lying in the grass. As soon as he picked it up, it exploded, severing his hand.

Hammoud was taken to Nabatieh’s government hospital and treated for his injuries.

Five shepherds in Mayfadoun were wounded in a separate incident when their pickup truck detonated a land mine. The victims included a seven-year-old boy, who suffered serious injuries. They were all treated at Jib-Jinnin Hospital, said the paper.

The United Nations estimates that Israel left at least 130,000 mines and unexploded shells in the 850sq.km zone that it evacuated in May 2000.

Since Israel's pullout, at least 16 civilians have been killed and more than 90 injured by mines and unexploded shells left in south Lebanon, according to Lebanese sources – Albawaba.com
