Top Israeli officials confirmed Wednesday that Israel will distribute gas mask equipped with anti-nuclear fallout pills to its citizens in order to reduce the danger from the radioactive weapons.

Israel’s Defense Ministry Director-General, Amos Yaron told Ha'aretz daily that Israel was about to become the first country in the Middle East to equip its citizenry with an antidote to the fallout from a radioactive weapon.

According to Yaron, the defense establishment has decided to include Lugol's Iodine capsules in the protective kits it distributes to the public, the daily reported. The pills, costing about US$ 1 a piece, are directing at neutralizing the influence of radioactive iodine by buttressing the thyroid gland, considered a key mechanism for sustaining the body's immunity.

"We must institute all necessary measures of caution," Yaron said, adding that the capsules would be added to the gas mask kits, which are directed largely against the effects of biological and chemical warfare "in the near future." (Albawaba.com)
