ALBAWABA —  Israeli airplanes launched the first attack on the Lebanese capital since the ceasefire deal was created in November 2024 late Friday, striking a building in the Al-Jamous neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburb. This was a major escalation.

Shortly before the bombing was executed, the Israeli military warned the people of Al-Hadath and Al-Jamous to leave.  According to the Israeli Defense Ministry, the attack was retaliation for two rockets that were intercepted close to Kiryat Shmona after being fired from Lebanon into northern Israel.  Hezbollah reiterated its commitment to the truce and denied any role in the incident.

Israeli soldiers conducted a number of retaliation operations in southern Lebanon after the Beirut attack.  According to Lebanon's Ministry of Health, the airstrikes hit many areas, including Kfar Tibnit, where one person was killed and eight others, including children, were wounded.  There were reports of further shelling in the Kfar Sir, Yohmor, and Al-Khiam regions.

There would be "no calm in Beirut without calm in the Galilee," Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said, stressing that the Lebanese government has responsibility for any cross-border firing.

Additionally, the Israeli military threatened to intensify its reaction if rocket firing persisted and dropped incendiary bombs on communities in southern Lebanon.

Prime Minister Najeeb Mikati of Lebanon, meanwhile, denounced any action that would incite fresh hostilities and demanded an immediate inquiry into the missile launches.  He underlined how crucial it is to preserve Lebanon's stability in the face of Israel's continued breaches of the ceasefire accord.

Despite the shaky ceasefire, the Israeli army reported that it had hit more than 50 sites in southern Lebanon in recent days, sparking fears of a wider confrontation breaking out along the Israel-Lebanon border.
