Israeli airstrikes targeted a school run by the United Nations refugee agency that was providing shelter to displaced Palestinians in Gaza Tuesday, according to Agence France Presse.
UN officials told AFP that Israeli tanks shelled the school two days in a row, with the officials witnessing the second round during an inspection of the damage Tuesday.
"Yesterday we got reports that [the UNRWA school in al-Maghazi] was shelled and so today we sent our guys down to investigate and see which side the fire came from. They [the UN staff] went down there with Israeli clearance, and while they were there, they came under Israeli shelling," the official said, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity.
Major holes were blown through the walls of the school during the attack. Fortunately, no one was injured at the time of this report.
A formal letter was submitted to Israeli leadership on the shelling and displaced Palestinians who sought refuge inside the school have since been evacuated.
UNRWA is providing housing and refuge in 60 of its schools in the Strip for more than 100,000 people who have been displaced from their homes in Gaza since the start of Israel's offensive two weeks ago.
