ALBAWABA - The second and final day of the genocide trial at The Hague marked a significant moment as Israel wrapped up its defense against South Africa's allegations of violating the Genocide Convention. The trial, initiated by the Republic of South Africa, accused Israel of breaches related to the devastating events in Gaza.

During the three-hour court session at The Peace Palace in The Hague, Israel's legal team vehemently rejected the charges, arguing that South Africa's claims were "largely distorted." They maintained that Israel had taken extensive measures to prevent harm to civilians during its military operations in Gaza.

Key Points from Israel's Defense:

  • Denial of Genocide Charges: Israel categorically denied the accusations of genocide, emphasizing that its actions did not meet the criteria outlined in the Genocide Convention.
  • Preventive Measures: The defense contended that Israel had made concerted efforts to minimize harm to civilians and asserted that civilian casualties were not intentional but occurred in the course of legitimate attacks on military targets.
  • Challenge to Court's Authority: Israel's legal representatives argued that the International Court of Justice lacked the authority to intervene in Israel's military operations in Gaza under the framework of the Genocide Convention.

While the court proceedings unfolded, demonstrators outside the Peace Palace made their voices heard. Palestinian and Israeli protesters gathered, watching the trial on large screens. In a tense atmosphere, Palestinian protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with Israel's defense by chanting slogans such as "Yalancı" (liar).

The trial, which has garnered international attention, will now await further developments as the court evaluates the arguments presented by both parties.
