Iraq and Lebanon are on the brink of a deal that would pump oil into Lebanon, Iraqi oil ministry’s first under-secretary, Taha Hammoud, was quoted by the Daily Star newspaper as saying Monday.

The project envisions constructing an oil pipeline that would run through Iraq and Syria and into Lebanese shipping terminals on the Mediterranean, said the paper.

Hammoud was on an official visit to Beirut that aimed at enhancing oil and trade ties between the two countries, the paper said.

Lebanese oil officials were quoted by the daily last week as saying that Lebanon’s trade volume with Iraq could shoot up to more than $300 million in 2001 if the governments of both countries implement a protocol for re-supplying Lebanon with Iraqi oil after a 20-year hiatus -- Albawaba.com
