Iraq's switch from dollars to Euros for pricing its foreign transactions was the economic highpoint of 2000, according to a poll of economists published Tuesday.
Around 50 economists and university students questioned by the economic weekly Al-Iqtissadi said the switch was "the most important economic event of the year 2000".
According to those polled, the move also had "great political importance because it helps reduce the trade and financial hegemony of the United States".
Baghdad, branding the dollar "the currency of an enemy state" and a tool of US hegemony, has embraced the Euro as part of its battle against Washington, which led a military coalition in evicting Iraqi forces from Kuwait in the 1991 Gulf War -- BAGHDAD (AFP)
