Iraq: Two Marines killed as deadline for abducted journalist passed

Two Marines died in western Iraq on Friday when a suicide car bomber went off near them, the U.S. military said in a statement, cited Sunday by Reuters. The statement added the Marines had been taking part in an operation in Haqlaniya, 240 km west of Baghdad, when they were hit by a "suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device".

 

On Saturday, a car bomb blew up near a crowded market in eastern Baghdad, killing one person, according to police. Three policemen died in a car bombing in Baqouba northeast of Baghdad, authorities said, according to the AP.

 

Meanwhile, a deadline set by kidnappers for the release of American journalist Jill Carroll has passed with no word on her fate. Carroll, a 28-year-old freelancer abducted Jan. 7 in Baghdad. The journalist has since been seen only in footage obtained and aired by Al-Jazeera TV station Tuesday.
