Separate mortar barrages Sunday and Monday apparently targeting police stations in the northern city of Mosul killed six Iraqis, including two children, U.S. and Iraqi officials said.

Elsewhere, Kazem Shelash, a senior member of the disbanded Baath Party in the southern city of Basra, was killed Monday by two gunmen in a speeding car outside his shop, police Col. Karim al-Zeidi said, according to The AP.

A U.S. soldier was killed Sunday when a roadside bomb went off near a military patrol in northern Iraq in the province of Kirkuk, the US military said Monday.

In another incident, a suicide car bomber exploded at a western Baghdad checkpoint Monday, wounding three police and three bystanders, a police official said.
