The foreign ministers of Iran and Qatar have emphasized the need to strengthen Islamic unity and stamp out international terrorism, according to the official Iranian news agency (IRNA).
Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jasim Al Thani held talks in Tehran with his counterpart, Kamal Kharrazi, and exchanged viewpoints on the latest regional and international developments, IRNA said.
Kharrazi and Thani considered quick condemnation of the New York and Washington terrorist attacks by almost every Islamic country as a sign of the serious injuries inflicted on the wounded body of the Islamic world from terrorist attacks, said the agency, citing a statement by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
They also agreed on the point that the Islamic world had great potential for the establishment of peace and security in the world, as well as the prevention of undesirable confrontations between members of different religions and civilizations.
Kharrazi noted that the present time was a very sensitive era in which the opinion of the world population was approaching unity on various issues, including the need to combat terrorism.
He also emphasized that the disastrous incidents in the US should not “serve as a pretext for America to create another catastrophe elsewhere in the world, in order to take revenge of a vague enemy.”
"The Islamic world is very much concerned about the lives of the innocent Afghan nation today," added Kharrazi.
The top Iranian diplomat further emphasized that terrorism was a very complicated phenomenon, whose deadly dimensions now threatened the interests of many countries in the world.
He noted calls for the United Nations to step in to address the issue effectively and multilaterally.
Calling terrorism "an ominous phenomenon," Kharrazi condemned the “racist-Zionist regime of Israel's efforts aimed at relating the terrorist incidents in America with the Middle East developments.”
"The Zionists launched a huge wave of anti-Islamic propaganda following the Washington and New York attacks, trying to lead their aftermath to a full-scale war between Islam and Christianity," said Kharrazi, concluding that the “Zionists do not care the slightest bit about the future of the human society.”
The Qatari foreign minister, who is carrying a message from the emir to President Mohammad Khatami, agreed that the Islamic countries were seriously concerned about the possible aftermath of a vengeful US attack against Afghanistan.
"Islam condemns all types of terrorism, and the Islamic states' immediate condemnation of the recent sad incidents was a reflection of that Islamic teaching," said Thani.
He also presented a detailed account of his country's activities as the rotating head of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), while praising Iran's role during the previous term when it was the head of the organization.
"Qatar is trying to continue on the same bright path followed by Iran during the previous term," he concluded – Albawaba.com
