A conservative-controlled constitutional watchdog has rejected a bill passed by the Iranian parliament giving women full divorce rights, IRNA said Saturday.
The Guardians Council said the reformist-dominated parliament's changes to Iran's civil code, giving women the full right to file for a divorce before a civil court, were "contrary to Islam."
The parliamentary changes, in addition, would have given women the right to claim financial damages for the first time under the Islamic republic. Iranian law only allows women to divorce if they can prove their husband is insane, violent, impotent or incapable of providing financially.
However, such a step usually involves long and costly legal proceedings. For men, divorces are granted upon request.
