Iranian gas shipments to Turkey have been delayed from a prevously announced July 31 starting date to mid-August, senior Turkish energy officials said Wednesday.

“Because of the Turkish argument that the Iranian side is not ready yet, the project will start in the middle of August,” officials told the Turkish Daily News.

However, Iranian officials said they had made all the arrangements for starting the project at the earliest possible date.

The Iranian Libya Sanctions Act (ILSA), which is under debate in the US Congress, is to be renewed on August 1.

ILSA, which aims to penalize foreign companies that do business with alleged terrorism sponsors such as Iran, was first applied in August 1996.

The US administration is aiming for a two-year extension of ILSA.

US officials commented that the Turkish-Iranian gas deal was not being evaluated within the framework of ILSA.

"The thing which is important are the investments in Iran," one official said.
