Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi stated on Sunday that the name “Persian Gulf” is a historical reality that cannot be changed or distorted. Talking to the press on the sidelines of an exhibition of historical maps of the Persian Gulf, Kharrazi said the word "Persian" must never be omitted when referring to the waters off the country's southern coasts as it is based on history.

Referring to an atlas published by the National Geographic Society which has used “Arabian Gulf” as an alternative for the “Persian Gulf”, he said this name would in no way be acceptable for the sea.
