Senior Iranian and Egyptian officials met in Cairo on Monday to discuss expanding bilateral ties after 22 years of frozen relations.
The official Iranian news agency, IRNA, said that Deputy Foreign Minister for Research and Education Sadeq Kharrazi, currently in Cairo to attend a symposium on Egyptian-Iranian relations, conferred with his Egyptian countrepart Asia Abdul Rahamn Chalabi on issues of mutual interest.
At the meeting, Chalabi said that such meetings could lead to better understanding between Iranian and Egyptian officials.
“The two great nations of Iran and Egypt have a positive understanding of each other, and the relations between their intellectuals and scientists are very important for expansion of relations among Islamic states,” he said.
The Iranian deputy foreign minister, for his part, expressed satisfaction with the symposium and underlined the need for both countries' officials to exchange visits and share views on mutual, regional and international issues.
"Collaboration and communication among nations is considered a great achievement for human beings, he said, adding that profound and strategic relations between Iran and Egypt would guarantee the two sides' interests.
The second symposium on Iran-Egypt relations, attended by intellectuals from both countries, focuses on three topics of: international systems and opportunities to improve Iran-Egypt ties, regional developments and their effects on Iran-Egypt relations, and the study of Iran-Egypt relations.
It opened this week at Al Ahram University's Center for Political and Strategic Studies.
