Iran has rejected “fabricated and unfounded” claims by Israeli Prime Minister Aril Sharon’s claims that the Islamic republic had set up a missile base in Lebanon, reported the official Iranian news agency (IRNA).
Sharon said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post newspaper on Tuesday that "Iran has started building a base in Lebanon from which they can fire rockets or long-range Katyushas that can reach the center of the country," he claimed.
Sharon said discussions on this "threat" and how to combat it formed a major part of his talks last month in Washington, where he met President George W. Bush and other top US officials.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Hamid Reza Asefi, said “Sharon has raised such repeated allegations against Iran in a bid to cover up its aggression from air and ground on Lebanese territories,” the agency quoted him as saying in a statement.
Asefi said the timing of such allegations, which coincided with a two-day conference to support the Intifada in Tehran, were aimed at “diverting world public opinion from the important achievements of the conference in consolidating Muslim nations' solidarity with and support for the righteous struggles of the Palestinians.” – Albawaba.com
