Nearly 100,000 Iranian car-buyers are on the waiting list for the new Peugeot 206 and dealers are no longer accepting orders, press reports said Thursday.

Boosted by a heavy ad blitz, the 206 has stolen the limelight in the new car market even though buyers will have to wait until June for the first deliveries, said a sales executive with Peugeot's local partner Iran Khodro.

He told the Jam-e Jam paper that orders had almost hit the 100,000 mark and would no longer be accepted after Thursday for the French car, which carries a price tag of around 9,000 dollars.

Analysts quoted in the press said the success of the 206 would eat into the local market share of the Pride, from South Korea's Kia, as well as the obsolete domestically-made Paykan -- TEHRAN (AFP)
