Iran’s economic council of the state Management and Planning Organization has agreed with the purchase of six Airbus A330 planes, proposed by the Roads and Transportation ministry, according to Iran’s news agency (IRNA), quoting a statement by MPO as saying Sunday.
It said that the proposal was agreed upon in the Saturday session of the council, presided over by President Mohammad Khatami.
Foreign purchases need approval by the economic council for the monies to be made ready, according to the MPO.
Iran is to add three Airbuses to its air fleet by the end of the current Iranian calendar year, said the agency, adding that the country has already sealed a contract with Turkey to buy six 310-200 Airbus, three of them to be delivered this year.
Iran Air's fleet currently consists largely of old Boeing 747s bought before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
