Iran's security forces have killed two members of the banned Mujahedeen Khalq organization and arrested several others in a northern Tehran district, reported the official Iranian news agency (IRNA), quoting a local press report on Saturday.
The Persian daily Resaalat said members of the group had been dispatched from their bases in neighboring Iraq to carry out subversive operations inside the Islamic republic.
Security forces dismantled the “terrorist group in Pounak district in a surprise attack after keeping their activities under observation for sometime.”
Meanwhile, the agency quoted the Tehran-based Arabic language daily, Al Vefaq, as reporting that a car smuggling guns and ammunition from neighboring Iraq into Iran for “terrorist operations of the organization" was blown up in western Iran.
"The vehicle, which was loaded with guns to be used by hypocrites for terrorist operations, was stopped by police on the road from Khorramshahr to Ahwaz, but the driver blew up the car and fled the scene," the daily said.
Khalq, officially outlawed in the wake of the discovery of political assassinations, bomb blasts and terrorist schemes by its members in Iran in 1979 and thereafter, has long since moved its headquarters to neighboring Iraq, from where they launch sporadic attacks against Iran.
