Iran’s police in the northwestern city of Bile-Savar near Azerbaijan Republic seized some 8,000 obscene video CDs from smugglers on Wednesday, reported the Iranian News Agency (IRNA).

Head of the law enforcement forces, Siamak Afkhami, told IRNA that smugglers had fled to Azerbaijan Republic after leaving the haul behind.

Police are trying to track down the smugglers, he said. The total value of the contraband is estimated at 540 million rials ($313,000), Afkhami added.

Meanwhile, the agency said that customs officials in the border city of Astara near Azerbaijan Republic confiscated some 600 satellite receivers as well as 300 cellular phones, hidden in a truck.

Satellite dishes, banned in the Islamic Republic, are usually smuggled from Gulf Arab states and through northern and northwestern borders into Iran and sold on the black market – Albawaba.com
