Int'l conference on UN reform opens in Iran

The International Conference on United Nations Reform opened in Tehran at the Foreign Ministry's Institute for Political and International Studies Sunday.

 

Domestic experts and officials as well as ambassadors and representatives from 20 foreign countries attended the conference. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan released a report entitled "In Larger Freedom" on March 20.

 

In his report, Annan proposed sweeping changes in the structure of the United Nations Organization.

 

According to <i>IRNA</i>, Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi is due to address the inaugural ceremony of the conference following a speech by secretary of the conference.

 

Foreign countries' ambassadors and representatives will also deliver speeches, submit articles, and present their viewpoints on Annan's report.

 

Russia, Britain, France, Sweden, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Malaysia, India, Greece, Zimbabwe, Finland, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Turkey are among the countries attending the two-day conference.
