The interim governor of Basra, Iraq's second largest city, was shot and killed Tuesday along with two of his bodyguards, a council spokesman said.

According to him, Hazem Tawfiq al-Anachi was shot dead at a checkpoint in the southern Iraqi city by armed men wearing security uniforms.

"My father was killed as he was leaving home at about 8:00 am when unknown gunmen fired at him from near a checkpoint that is 100 meters from our place," Issam al-Ainachi told AFP. The incident took place in the Jubaila neighbourhood in the center of Basra.

Ainachi, 59, took over the governorship after judge Wael Abdul Latif was named minister for governorate affairs in June in the interim government of Prime Minister Iyad Allawi.

Meanwhile, a bomb attack on an Iraqi minibus killed four civilians Tuesday and injured two others, hospital officials said. The attack occurred Tuesday near the city of Baqouba, north of Baghdad. (albawaba.com)
