ALBAWABA - According to one military official, early Sunda extinguished a major fire at an ammunition depot outside Indonesia's capital.
The military was sweeping nearby residential areas to retrieve materials that may have flown out during explosions. The fire was extinguished at around 3.45 a.m. on Sunday, said Mohammad Hasan, the military commander for Jakarta.
On Saturday at around 6.30 p.m. (11:30 GMT), a fire broke out at a military munitions stockpile in Bogor, on the outskirts of Jakarta, generating a series of thunderous explosions and sending flames and smoke into the night sky. The military claimed no one was killed or harmed, Reuters reported.
As search and rescue teams, Hasan told reporters near the site: "We are investigating the area around the location and we’re going to comb and clean materials that were thrown out of the depot,". The military warned residents not to handle the possibly lethal objects, but they did not provide a description.
Firefighters used robotic cars to help minimize the fire. The military speculated that the fire could have started from chemically unstable chemicals in a portion of the building used to store older military equipment.
According to Hasan, the military was storing the ammo there since they were being disposed of.
