Indian software companies see e-governance in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states as a huge opportunity to market their products.

Vivek Singhal, chairman of the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council, was quoted by the Gulf News regarding "the GCC governments' keenness to introduce e-governance."

The UAE is India's biggest Middle East IT market with a 43 percent share last year, said Nagaraja Rao, resident executive of the council's Bangalore base.

The region requires power and fuel management systems, which constitute a major growth opportunity, he said.

Singhal and Rao are leading a team of Indian IT companies seeking fresh opportunities in the Gulf. The ECS has just signed an MoU with the Oman Centre for Investment, Export and Production.

According to the daily, the team will stay in the UAE for three days before moving on to Bahrain.

Singhal said India's target of $50 billion in IT exports by 2008, up from $9 billion last year, was realistic.

He aso said that “the US may be experiencing an economic slowdown, but we expect this to last no more than nine months." – Albawaba.com
