In 1982, Yasser Arafat led the battle against the Israeli invasion to Lebanon and the "battle of steadfastness" during the siege of Beirut by the Israeli forces.
Following the siege, Arafat left to Tunisia.
In 1984 and 1987, he was reelected as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization by the 17th, 18th and the 19th sessions of the Palestine National Council.
