Illiteracy in the UAE has dropped to less than 15 percent during the past ten years, reported the Gulf News daily, quoting statistics issued by the ministry of education and youth.
General supervisor at the Sharjah Educational District's Adult Education Department, Abdul Jalil Aqeel Hajooni, told the daily that according to the statistics, there were a large number of illiterate students in the 1980s, but the number had gradually decreased since then.
"This means that the ministry has succeeded in its efforts to eradicate illiteracy," Hajooni said.
According to figures issued by the ministry, the number of schools distributed around the country has sharply risen in the past ten years: there are 246 schools with 124,480 students in Abu Dhabi; 104 schools with 54,446 students in Al-Ain; 38 schools with 10,940 students in the Western Region; 369 schools with 170,854 students in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. There are also 71 schools with 33,662 students in Sharjah; 35 schools with 17,797 students in Ajman, 21 schools with 7210 students in Umm al-Qaiwain, 86 schools with 38,405 students in Fujairah and 86 schools with 24,565 students in Ras al-Khaimah -- Albawaba.com
