Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (“Huawei”), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, has signed an next generation network (NGN) transformation contract, worth more than US$ 50 million, with CANTV (NYSE:VNT), the leading provider of telecommunications services in Venezuela.

Huawei will help CANTV  transfer its traditional analog network to the next generation network and convert the legacy voice traffic into an internet protocol (IP) based system, that will provide centralised call control, service provisioning and subscriber profiles. The network transformation will deploy Huawei’s U-SYS solution including soft switches, media gateways, and multi-service access nodes.

Miguel Benatuil, general manager, Technology and Operations, CANTV said: “This project is a quantum leap in our ability to provide telecom services to our customers and increment our voice and data portfolio. Huawei’s cost-effective solutions were in line with our vision – this was the critical factor that made us select them for the transformation of our PSTN platform. Our expectations are also very high and we believe Huawei is going to exceed them, incrementing the value that we are adding to our business with this project.”

CANTV’s vision is to “improve Venezuelan people’s quality of life by providing telecommunication solutions that exceed their expectations”, began in 2005 as an aggressive network to modernise the telecom industry in the country. The booming Venezuelan economy also helps drive investment into the country’s telecom industry.

Since September 2005, CANTV has been deploying Huawei’s U-SYS NGN solution. After successfully integrating with the existing system, U-SYS NGN network is now running satisfactorily nationwide.

“This is a real milestone for Huawei in the massive deployment of Next Generation Networks internationally,” said Wang Jiading, vice president, Huawei Technologies, Middle East and North Africa operations. “We are proud that CANTV trusts and shares our vision of enriching people’s life through communications. Huawei will work closely with CANTV to offer better quality and advanced services in Venezuela.”

CANTV will continue to aggressively transform its fixed voice network that takes its fixed subscriber base to the NGN service network, and establish a network architecture with a clear migration path to the IMS.
