A ship apparently smuggling Iraqi oil abruptly "sank" in the Arabian Gulf Sunday night, with all 12 crew rescued, after it was intercepted by a US-led naval force monitoring UN sanctions against Baghdad, reported the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Monday.
The agency quoted the multinational interception force spokeswoman as saying that Honduras-flagged Georgios went down in international waters some 60 nautical miles (111 km) off the coast of Kuwait, while trying to evade the navy ships.
A US ship rescued all 12 crew members, who were “oil- soaked but in good condition,” she said.
An official at the Bahrain-based Marine Emergency Mutual Center (MEMV) said the ship had been carrying around 900 tons of crude, but added that the resulting oil slick posed no danger to any nearby countries, SPA quoted him as saying – Albawaba.com
