Gulf Air and Emirates have suspended flights to Sri Lanka from Tuesday following an increase in insurance surcharges, reported the Gulf Daily News.
But SriLankan Airlines will continue its twice weekly flights between Bahrain and Colombo, an official said on Monday.
The Tuesday and Friday flights would continue with surcharges on fares of BD16 for a single and BD32 return, sales manager Dilip De Alwis said.
He said the insurance surcharge was introduced after July's terrorist attack in Colombo airport and “had nothing to do with the attacks in the US.”
"Gulf Air is suspending flights to Colombo as a result of the prohibitive cost of insuring its aircraft and passengers on the Sri Lanka route," a company statement said, cited by the paper.
"The airline will make every effort to re-route passengers travelling to Colombo on later flights via an intermediary destination," it said – Albawaba.com
