Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, met with Ghada Waly, the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Office in Vienna. They discussed several areas of common interest within the health sector.

Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, stated that the Minister directed cooperation with the United Nations Office on Crime and Drugs. Together, they will organize training courses for oversight and follow-up teams, focusing on using global programs to combat corruption and promote good governance.

Additionally, the Minister emphasized the need to establish centres providing medical services and psychological support for displaced individuals from neighbouring countries. These efforts will be carried out in collaboration with partner agencies and relevant ministries.

Ghada Waly confirmed that the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is prioritizing the citizens’ right to voluntary treatment for addiction within the Opiate Alternatives Programme. The program aims to facilitate access to mental health services, ensuring society and families can effectively address drug-related issues. Furthermore, ongoing evaluations will guide the expansion of the opioid alternatives program to other governorates in Egypt.

Concluding the meeting, the Minister extended an official invitation to attend the second edition of the World Conference on Population, Health, and Development, scheduled for October 2024, under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.
