Khaled Mashal, chief of the political bureau of the Palestinian movement Hamas has praised Morocco for its historic position on the Palestinian conflict in a television interview in the Moroccan Channel 1 (TVM).

Mashal made the comments in Cairo while attending the funeral service for the deceased Palestinian President, Yasser Arafat. He said he hoped the Moroccan people would preserve their unity and maintain the historic positions of the Moroccan king, people and government regarding the Palestinian cause.

Morocco has previously maintained low level diplomatic contacts with Israel and is one of the few Arab countries to allow Israeli citizens to visit freely. Its population, however, is known to much less welcoming of Israel and there have been a number of popular rallies in solidarity with the Palestinians. (albawaba.com)
