The soon-to-be-launched Gulf electronic marketplace will eventually expand to cover other regional markets, according to a senior official of the federation of GCC chambers of commerce.

“A taskforce to supervise the project has been formed,” said Mohammed Al Mulla, secretary-general of the federation, cited by the Gulf News on Monday.

The team will be responsible for increasing operational awareness, human resources training, national incubator programs, and proposing common laws governing the sector, said the paper.

"We must examine all developments in the new economic culture to enable our region to avoid the digital divide. We must strive to institute logical solutions that catapult our region into the digital era."

Meanwhile, senior Emirati officials confirmed that some progress has been made in building a framework to enact common Gulf laws governing the IT industry, the paper said.

Among these would be those pertaining to cyber crime, they added. But the breakthrough will come when each state passes its own laws – Albawaba.com
