Chairman of the Iraqi Governing Council (IGC) Iyad Allawi described his visit to Syria earlier this week as "successful", stating it paved the way for a security accord between Baghdad and Damascus.

In an interview with the Jordanian Al-Rai newspaper Thursday, Allawi said a security agreement would be concluded by Iraqi Interior Minister Nouri al-Badran during an upcoming visit to Syria.

Allawi added that Iraq's security problem stemmed primarily from the lack of control on its borders.

The visit, the first by a member of the US-picked Iraq Governing Council, had the key aim of "bringing the border between the two countries under control," he explained.

He added that the visit had helped "break the stalemate", which prevailed between the two countries since the US-led war on Iraq ousted Saddam's regime. (Albawaba.com)
