ALBAWABA - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced Sunday that she will run in the upcoming European Parliament elections, in an apparent effort to boost her far-right party's poll numbers.
As she took the stage to launch her candidacy, Meloni said that she wanted to ensure that the Italians were satisfied with her course of work across Italy and Europe.
The Italian Prime Minister said that through her candidacy, she aims to bring the center-right parties closer to the ruling majority and push the left into the opposition. She said that it would be a difficult mission but not impossible.
During the speech, Meloni praised the government's work in fighting illegal immigrants efforts and "defending Christian values" since she took office in October 2022.
According to a report by POLITICO, citing a spokesperson for the European Parliament, if Meloni wins and takes up the European Parliament seat, she would have to give up her current position as a prime minister.
Meloni's party already tops the current polls in Italy and is anticipated to earn 27.2 percent of the vote, ahead of the center-left PD (20.3 percent) and the Five Star Movement (16.8 percent), POLITICO reported.
