Police in the western Pakistani city of Quetta fired tear gas Monday at more than 10,000 demonstrators who set fire to buildings and damaged vehicles in protest against the US-led strikes in Afghanistan, sources reported on Monday.
Al Jazeera satellite TV station reported that the protests erupted early Monday morning after the town turned into a “ghost town” following the onset of US-led attacks on neighboring Afghanistan.
The violence came after the chief clerics of several mosques in Quetta reacted to the military strikes unleashed on the Taliban Sunday night by announcing over their public address systems that jihad (holy war) was now "mandatory" for Pakistani Muslims.
At least three separate demonstrations were organized in Quetta by students and radical pro-Taliban Islamic groups, according to AFP – Albawaba.com
