A lawyer for a Hamas spokesman detained since Thursday at Amman's international airport, said Tuesday he had obtained permission from a top court to see his client, but he had been denied this access by the interior minister.
"The head of the high security court, the country's highest court, agreed to my request to visit Ibrahim Ghoshe but the interior minister [Awad Khleifat] insisted on barring me from visiting my client," said Saleh Armuti in a statement to Albawaba.com.
According to the Islamist lawyer, who is the chief of the bar association, the minister’s refusal is in itself a violation of the Constitution “in a way more serious than detaining Ibrahim Ghoshe.
He added that all his attempts and mediation to end the plight of Ghoshe had failed.
The lawyer had told AFP that he planned to file an appeal with the judicial authorities against the continued detention of Ghoshe at Amman's Queen Alia Airport.
Ghoshe arrived unexpectedly on Thursday from his exile in Doha aboard a Qatari Airways plane. He was refused entry into Jordan and the aircraft has since been grounded at the airport.
Ghoshe, a Jordanian of Palestinian origin, and three other Hamas leaders were deported to Doha in November 1999 after Jordan outlawed the Palestinian group on charges it was destabilizing the kingdom.
Jordan has repeatedly said the four would be allowed to return to Amman only if they renounced their Hamas membership.
Jordanian Information Minister Saleh Kallab said Sunday Ghoshe would stay at the airport until Qatar flies him back to his exile in the Gulf emirate – Albawaba.com
