A diplomat and a student from Syria arrested in Germany on suspicion of spying on their own compatriots were back in court on Saturday, according to a spokeswoman for the German federal prosecutor.
Kay Nehm confirmed that the pair, who were arrested in December, were suspected of spying on members of the Syrian opposition inside Germany.
The full names of the men have not been released. One of the men, identified only as Ahmad I, is the cultural attaché at the Syrian embassy in Bonn, while the other, Ahmad Al-Y is a student at the University of Mainz, AFP reported.
Media reports have said the men sometimes threatened to harm family members back in Syria to get dissidents to cooperate with them.
Focus magazine, in its issue to appear on Monday, reports that at least four people were imprisoned upon return to Syria after being named by Ahmad I. (Albawaba.com)
