German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer is due to travel to the Middle East by the end of this month, in an effort to help de-escalate tensions in the Occupied Territories, reported the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, citing a German TV report.
The private German television network N-TV said Saturday that Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder told Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon during a phone conversation that Fischer would visit the Mideast region, following the latest escalations by the Israeli army.
Schroeder had earlier urged all sides in the Mideast conflict "to end the escalation of violence" following stepped-up Israeli attacks on civilian targets inside the Occupied Territories.
"We must use all the political possibilities, even if they are limited," the chancellor said, referring to increased efforts for a peaceful solution to the crisis.
"Nobody has a patent remedy but we cannot turn away," he added.
