ALBAWABA - Earlier, a leaked audio recording revealed conversations by senior German army officers discussing the Ukraine war. The German defense minister, Boris Pistorius, said that the leak "was an individual error".
Pistorius stated at a press conference that one of the participants dialed into the meeting via a "unauthorized connection," which resulted in the leak.
"According to our assessment, a conversation in the Air Force division was intercepted. We are currently unable to say for certain whether changes were made to the recorded or transcribed version that is circulating on social media," said a spokesperson for the German defense ministry.
On Friday, Margarita Simonyan, the head of Russian public broadcaster RT, released what she claimed was an audio recording of German military officers, including Air Force Chief Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz.
The White House described the leaked audio tape of senior German army soldiers discussing the Ukraine war as a "transparent attempt" by Russia to cause splits among Kyiv's Western allies.
"This is a blatant and transparent attempt by the Russians to sow discord and division, to make it appear that the West isn't unified," National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby stated.
The leaked audio recording
The recording, aired by Simonyan on Telegram, contains a debate about whether Taurus cruise missiles are capable of destroying a bridge, which appears to be a reference to the new bridge connecting Russia-occupied Crimea to the Russian mainland across the Kerch Strait.
The recording appears to be from a video conference between four Air Force officials discussing Russia's campaign in Ukraine. In the leaked audio, they discussed how German officers could provide Ukrainians with targeting information without appearing to be directly involved in the fight with Russia.
