The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states decided Sunday to work out a common policy on water, reported the Oman Observer newspaper.

It said that the annual shortfall of water reached 15 billion cubic meters in the year 2000.

GCC ministers of water and electricity, currently meeting in Riyadh, ordered a committee to work out such a policy.

They also recommended making the Jubail centre for research on desalinating sea water a regional center for the GCC.

The center, said the paper, will be tasked with unifying water prices and calculating consumption of drinking water in the six Gulf states -- Albawaba.com
