At least 11 Tamil Tiger guerrillas and three policemen were killed in fresh fighting in northern and eastern Sri Lanka, the defence ministry said Monday.

Security forces shot dead four members of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the northen peninsula of Jaffna on Sunday while seven more rebels were killed in the eastern province, the ministry said.

It said three policemen were also killed in clashes in the eastern province over the weekend.

Tamil Tiger guerrillas are leading a drawn-out campaign to create an independent state in the island's northern and eastern regions for Sri Lanka's Tamil minority.
