The French explosives experts’ report on the Beirut blast investigation is set to be completed in two weeks’ time, a judicial source told The Daily Star Tuesday.
Judge Fadi Sawwan, investigator into the Aug. 4 Beirut port explosion, was expected to receive the French report two weeks ago, but it had been delayed because the explosives team asked Sawwan for additional information.
The judicial source also said that a French judge is expected to reach Lebanon in the beginning of the year, along with an experts team for further investigations.
“An investigation will be conducted in January by a French judge which will be different from the one undertaken by the Lebanese judicial court,” the source said.
The foreign teams’ reports aim to determine the cause of the explosion of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate haphazardly stored in a port warehouse by authorities since 2014. What ignited the ammonium nitrate, which killed nearly 200 people and injured thousands, is yet to be determined.
The reports are expected to determine whether the incident was an intentional act of sabotage or an accident.
