ALBAWABA - Following his visit to Egypt, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Paris may recognize the State of Palestine "in June" during a conference on Palestine to be held in New York, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.
"We must move towards recognition, and we will do so in the coming months," the French president revealed in an interview with France 5 television yesterday.
He added: "Our goal is to co-chair this conference with Saudi Arabia in June, where we can achieve mutual recognition (of a Palestinian state) with several parties."
Macron told reporters: "We have decided to co-chair a conference on the two states next June," stressing that Paris and Riyadh will work in the coming months to "double and unify our diplomatic initiatives to attract the entire world to this path."
Reuters reported that Palestine has been recognized as a sovereign state by about 150 countries, however, most Western countries, including the United States, Britain, France, Germany and Japan, still don't.
