At least four people were killed and more than 700 were made homeless in heavy flooding in southern Brazil, civil defense officials reported Tuesday.

Three women died in mudslides and a man was electrocuted after three days of torrential rain in Santa Catarina State, where 23 villages with some 250,000 inhabitants have been placed under a state of emergency, the officials said.

In the nearby state of Rio Grande do Sul, four communities were in a state of emergency after a hailstorm tore the roofs off some 1,500 homes -- WASHINGTON (AFP)
