Egyptian Prosecutor General Maher Abdel Wahhab has agreed to refer the former minister of finance and nine senior Customs Department officials to the state Higher Security Court, the Egyptian Al Gomhoriyya daily said.
The minister and the officials are accused of making profits and taking deliberate actions resulting in the loss of 30 million pounds by the Customs Department, in what is known as the “Grand Customs” case.
The daily said that the public funds prosecutor, Medhat Abdel Fattah, had interrogated 268 suspects and witnesses in a period beginning 18 months ago, compiling 5,500 documents.
The 2,000 pages of interrogation transcripts cover 3O cases, five of them attributed to the former minister, the head of the customs department and others.
Six cases have been referred to the disciplinary court. These involve alleged damage to public treasury interests.
Seven other cases related to evading customs duties were also referred to the tax and customs evasion prosecutor - Albawaba.com
