The Islamic movement Hamas claimed responsibilty for a suicide bombing which killed five people and injured 31 others Sunday when a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up at a train station in Naharia, in northern Israel.

AFP said that five were killed, while Haaretz said that death toll reached four.

Israel, meanwhile, blamed an "incitement campaign launched by the Palestinian Authority," for the suicide bombing, a government spokesman told AFP.

Medical sources told Israel radio that there were dozens of casualties.

Security forces and rescue workers rushed to the scene from all over the area and are attempting to evacuate the victims to hospitals, said Haaretz newspaper, citing the radio.

Roads leading to the area have been closed off.
