Two Egyptians, two Iraqis and a Jordanian described as representatives of Islamic organizations were deported from Albania on Monday for carrying out illegal activities, officials said.
"The documents of these five people and their activities did not conform to Albanian law," said a police official who asked to remain anonymous.
The two Egyptians, two Iraqis and a Jordanian were "representatives of different Islamic organizations and had been living in Albania since 1993", he said.
Police arrested the five on Saturday.
The men, together with their families -- making a total of 18 people -- were put on various Turkish Airlines flights to Cairo, Amman, and Algiers, said a source at the airport.
According to Tirana, several Islamic organizations have based themselves in Albania since the early 1990s to carry out religious or humanitarian activities.
Police sources said US FBI agents have been helping their Albanian counterparts in operations against terrorism and organized crime for several months, while CIA personnel have been working for several years with the Albanian intelligence services -- TIRANA (AFP)
