The first U.S. military aircraft has landed at Baghdad airport, an American military source told Reuters on Sunday. "At least one aircraft has landed at the airport," said the senior source in the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division's aviation brigade, who was at the airport.
He said a C-130 military transporter landed at about 8 P.M. local time (1600 GMT), about an hour after dark, on the western, military side of the airport.
Meanwhile, U.S. troops pushed into the center of Karbala on Sunday, after fierce battles with Iraqi paramilitaries threatening U.S. supply lines north to Baghdad.
Dozens of Iraqis and one U.S. soldier were killed in intense fighting Saturday and overnight. There was still some resistance throughout Sunday morning. Heavy gunfire erupted when suspected paramilitaries popped up on rooftops or from doorways of narrow garbage-filled streets.
By early afternoon the city was relatively quiet. At the end of the day, U.S. officers said they had taken out all military targets in the city, capturing Syrians and men from three other countries who were fighting with the Fedayeen. (Albawaba.com)
