A fire erupted in a prison south of Rabat overnight Friday, killing some 50 inmates, the official Moroccan news agency reported.

The blaze occurred at the Sidi Moussa jail in El Jadida, 180 kms south of the capital of Rabat, the MAP agency said.

About 40 other inmates were wounded in what is believed to be the worst fire ever at a Moroccan prison.

Officials believe the fire was caused by an electrical problem, the agency added. (Albawaba.com)
